SailEver¶
SailEver records sailing on the wrist (Garmin, Wear OS, later Apple Watch) and turns the recordings into an online logbook. These are the words used in the UI, docs, code and conversations. mise doccheck flags the banned ones.
Recording¶
Track: One recording from Start to Stop on the watch, or one uploaded FIT file. Pauses and hourly uploads stay inside the track. Avoid: Leg (reserved for a possible later harbour-to-harbour view), activity, session, segment
Track file: A track's points, normalized to one every 5 s, stored as one compact file in object storage and read by the server and the browser (ADR 017). Avoid: Points table, raw track
Trip: One or more tracks that belong to the same voyage, e.g. a charter week. Avoid: Voyage, passage, cruise
Boating trip: A trip on Garmin recorded as Garmin Boating activities instead of Sailing, chosen under Settings → Activity Type before the trip starts. Its vessel states leave out Sail and Motorsail. Every other trip is a Sailing trip.
Day: One local calendar day of a trip (in the trip's time zone) with at least one kept track point. Avoid: Sea day, boat day, stage
Trim (IN / OUT point): A non-destructive cut of a track's start (IN) or end (OUT). Only the part between IN and OUT counts. Avoid: Crop, cut
Bridge: A straight connection from the end of one track to the start of the next one in the same trip, for a stretch that wasn't recorded. Bridges are switched on per trip (then between all tracks) and count as distance. Avoid: Gap fill
Vessel state:
What the boat is doing, set on the watch: one of 8 states, either underway (engine, motorsail, sail) or stationary (mooring, anchor, buoy, shoreline, adrift). Definitions: specs/shared/vessel-state.md.
Avoid: Propulsion mode, sail plan
State period: The stretch of a track since the vessel state was last set. The watch shows its distance and average speed (underway) or its duration (stationary). Avoid: Leg, state leg, stint
Segment (SLTB): One uploaded chunk of a track in the SLTB wire format. A wire and code term only, never shown in the UI. Avoid: in the UI, use track
Things the user owns¶
Logbook: The signed-in user's home: totals, the year chart and the most recent trips. Avoid: Dashboard, my trips
Boat: A vessel the user sails on, which can be set on a trip. Avoid: Vessel, yacht
Device: A watch (Garmin, Wear OS, Apple Watch) paired to a user's account so it can upload tracks. Avoid: Watch (for a paired one), wearable
Watch: A watch model in general, e.g. on the public list of compatible watches. Once paired, it's a device.
Pairing: Linking a watch to an account with the 6-digit code shown on the watch. Avoid: Registration, linking
Device registration: The record a watch sends once per app version (platform, device ID, model, app version) after the user has given consent on the watch, independent of pairing. Never shown to users. Avoid: Pairing (that's linking to an account)
Consent: On the watch: the user's Yes to "Send your trips to sailever.com?", asked the first time pairing opens. Stored on the watch only; until then the watch sends nothing. On the web: agreeing to the privacy policy (stored with its version). Avoid: Opt-in, permission (Garmin and Android use that for system permissions)
Public link:
A link (/t/<token>) the owner of a trip creates to show it read-only to anyone who has it, without an account. Works for 30 days. Every trip is private until it is shared this way; there are no visibility levels.
Avoid: Share slug, public trip (as a setting), visibility
Crew link:
A link (/crew/<token>) that anyone on board a trip (owner, skipper or crew member) creates so more crew can join it. Works for 30 days; a new one replaces the old one.
Avoid: Invite code, crew invite token
Crew member: A user who joined a trip with its crew link. The trip is in their logbook, and its miles count for them (each date once). Crew only look, unless they are the skipper. The owner of the trip is not a crew member of it. Avoid: Guest, follower, collaborator
Trip role: What someone is on a trip, which says what they may do there: owner, skipper, crew, or public (on a public link). One permission table for all roles (sharing.md § Roles). Avoid: Permission level, access level
Public skipper profile:
A skipper's public page at skipper.sailever.com/
Handle: The name in the address of a public skipper profile, chosen by its user. Avoid: Username, nickname
Skipper: The person in charge of the boat on a trip: the owner ("I was the skipper") or one crew member the owner made skipper. At most one per trip. A crew skipper has the owner's rights, except deleting the trip, deleting tracks they didn't upload and moving tracks. Avoid: Captain, admin (of a trip)
Terms: The terms of service a user accepts when the account is created (stored with their version), next to the privacy consent. Avoid: EULA, T&Cs
Passkey: A device-bound sign-in credential (WebAuthn). The magic link stays the fallback. Avoid: Security key, WebAuthn key
Magic link: A one-time sign-in link sent by email. Avoid: Login link, email token
Products¶
WatchApp: The SailEver watch app that records tracks and uploads them to the logbook. One product, one spec, built for Garmin and Wear OS (Apple Watch planned). Avoid: Watch app, recorder app
Phone app:
The planned SailEver app for iOS and Android (specs/mobile/).
Avoid: Companion app (in the UI)
DataField: The SailEver Garmin data field that shows sailing values inside Garmin's own activities. It never uploads to SailEver. Avoid: Data field, widget
Numbers¶
Distance: Nautical miles of the tracks between IN and OUT, plus the bridges. The same rule applies to the trip, the day and the logbook totals. Avoid: Sea miles
Sailing time / Engine time: Hours under sail or under engine. Time below 0.5 kn is left out of sailing time. Avoid: Sail hours, motor hours
Skipper miles: Distance on trips the user was the skipper of, whoever recorded them (logbook.md § Totals). Avoid: Captain miles, command miles
Night miles: Distance underway in nautical night: the sun more than 12° below the horizon (ingestion.md § Night miles). Avoid: Dark miles
Planning (phone app, planned)¶
Route: A planned passage drawn on the chart: an ordered list of route points. Never recorded, so never a track. Avoid: Plan, passage
Route point: One numbered point of a route. Avoid: Mark
Route section: The straight part of a route between two consecutive route points, with distance and bearing. Avoid: Leg, segment
