SailEver WatchApp Film — Script

115 seconds (1:55) · 16:9 · no voiceover · for the sailever.com home hero and /watchapp

Animatic (open in a browser): apps/server/docs/web-redesign/films/watchapp-animatic.html. The website's film module is built from it (apps/server/lib/films/build_film_modules.py).

Production rules, capture process, export and upload are shared with the DataField film: see product-film-script.md.

1. Story

The film goes from the big picture to the details.

  1. Logo. 2 s, then straight into the watch.
  2. Overview. Your watch. A sailing instrument. A multi-day trip tracker. A digital logbook.
  3. Chapter 1 · A sailing instrument. What's on each screen and why a sailor cares.
  4. Chapter 2 · A multi-day trip tracker. Log a trip, motoring or sailing, staying, the drift reminder, the next day, the stats.
  5. Chapter 3 · A digital logbook. Garmin Connect, then the SailEver logbook, with vessel, sailing area, route and a share link.

Each chapter opens with a chapter card (2 s). The three overview headlines stack into a numbered list under FEATURES n / 3, with the label twice the old size. Lines that aren't active dim, and the active line is underlined and stretched sideways only, so it never overlaps the line below.

Rules for this film:

  • Titles only. One headline per scene, always in the same centre-left spot. Chapter 3 headlines sit top-left inside the title-safe area.
  • Say "your watch", never "your Garmin". Garmin is named only where it's a fact: Garmin Connect and the Connect IQ badge.
  • Highlights are fitted to the field and must read at a glance: the field pops to 1.2× (1.05× for the large SOG field), with a dark halo, an orange outline and a solid orange tag naming the value. Small fields carry the tag below, tall fields on the outline's bottom edge. About 1 s per value, so there's time to read it. They never cover the signal bars or the battery.
  • Units are NM everywhere: watch, summary, Garmin pill, web.
  • No semi-transparent cross-fades between scenes. Cuts, pushes and pops only.
  • No fade to black, no play button, no mouse cursor, no loop. The export ends on the end card.

15 1:06–1:11 Time-lapse: clock and chip run 08:12 → 10:30 together while the motoring stretch distance grows. BACK → list → SAIL → START. Header highlighted. MOTORING OR SAILING? A FEW CLICKS.

21 1:41–1:46 One arrow from the Garmin Connect card to SailEver. The web app replaces the card (no slide over it): a clean mock without traffic lights or URL bar, fully in frame. The route draws in and the stats count up to 54.0 NM. AUTO-SYNC ALL YOUR SAVED MILES TO SAILEVER LOGBOOK. ("ALL YOUR SAVED MILES" in orange) Whoosh
22 1:46–1:50 Callouts with anchor dots beside the text: Vessel (Bavaria Cruiser 41), Sailing area (Central Dalmatia), Route. On "Share it", a share card with a QR code and link pops from the public badge. ADD YOUR VESSEL, SAILING AREA AND ROUTE. / SHARE IT. Snare roll
23 1:50–1:55 End card straight in: small logo, headline, sailever.com, a larger Join the beta button, the Connect IQ badge. The watch keeps ticking. The export ends here. SAIL. YOUR WATCH WRITES THE LOGBOOK. Resolve at 1:51, tail to the end

Music structure: logo 0–2 s · overview 2–12.5 s · groove 12.5–56.5 s · break 56.5–60 s · groove 60–95 s · lift 95–110 s · outro 110–115 s. Groove 2 grows by 3 s (1.5 bars), so the music edit needs one half-bar cut there.

German headline for shot 21: ALLE GESPEICHERTEN MEILEN AUTOMATISCH INS SAILEVER-LOGBUCH.

4. Changes needed in the app before capture

The film follows the capture-wins rule, so these screens only exist once the app shows them:

  • NM instead of nM on the dashboard and nm in MenuResumeSubOne / MenuResumeSubMany.
  • AlertDriftMsg: Moving > 0.8 kn instead of SOG >= 0.8 kn (15s).
  • Stats page 1: rows Total / Sail / Engine instead of Tot / Sail / eng, with an NM unit header.
  • Environment page: the full moon name (Waxing gibbous) on 454 px, which currently falls back to WAX GIBB.
  • Start menu without the pairing row. Either record with a build that hides it, or accept Pair device in the capture.
  • Vessel state list: it always opens on ENGINE, so Motoring → Sailing is BACK, DOWN, DOWN, START. The copy says A few clicks. Opening the list on the next likely state would make One click true.
  • Known bug: on a paused track the timer draws PAUSED in the numerals font, which has no letters, so it shows empty boxes (DashboardView.drawTimer). The film doesn't show pause.

Film overlays, not app UI: the COG label on the track view, the close-ups of the speed and pressure curves, the highlight tags (SPEED, MAX, AVG, COG, NM, TIME, TIMER, TODAY, TOTAL), the day chip and the = DAY 1 + DAY 2 insert.

Painted out in the edit, not changed in the app: the + / − zoom icons on the track view (TrackView.drawZoomIcons) and the Jibe caption above the angle (TrackView.onUpdate). Both sit on black at fixed positions, so a static black mask covers them, and the angle is moved up into the caption's place. The app itself stays as released.

5. Notes for capture

  • Shots 05–10 need a long, calm sailing take (FIT playback of docs/ACTIVITY.fit).
  • Shot 11: two real course changes in the GPS simulation, about +90° and then −75°, with a straight stretch in between, at constant speed. Record the whole sequence in one take.
  • Shot 12: tide needs the simulator paired to a local apps/server with the seeded demo account. The time-lapse is one long real take over a day: the simulator takes its time from the Mac clock, so record from morning to evening (e.g. one frame every 30 s) while the GPS simulation moves the boat and pressure is lowered step by step in Activity Data. Speed it up in the edit.
  • Shot 13: the baro drop is recorded in real time and cut down.
  • Shot 17: set ANCHOR, then give the boat ≥ 0.8 kn. The alert fires after 15 s.
  • Shot 18: Continue trip appears after a stopped track, so record day 1 and day 2 as separate sessions with storage kept.
  • Shots 21–22: the sample trip is imported from the recorded FIT files, then given a vessel and a sailing area on the site. (Recorded before visibility levels were replaced by public links and crew links, ADR 010: the next edit should show "Share" creating a public link instead.)
